Yoga of Relaxation

In today’s fast moving competitive world all want to be ahead of the curve, ahead of their competitors. On some special occasion the need arises surely to be ahead of the curve but certainly not all the times. Stressing oneself leads to tremendous loss of vital energy and many in current era doesn’t really knows how to acquire this energy. Some of the most common problems of modern era have the solutions in the traditional way of living adopted by Yogis of yore. Traditionally, in order to achieve perfect relaxation, three methods are used by yogis. The three methods are physical, mental and spiritual. No relaxation is complete until one reaches the stage of spiritual relaxation.

Physical Relaxation

Every action is the result of thought which originates in the mind consciously or subconsciously. Thoughts take the form of action and there is a reaction in the body. When we want to perform an action, a thought is generated in the mind and transmitted to the brain. The brain telegraphs the message through the nerves and the muscles contract. Just as behind muscular contraction there is thought, so also behind relaxation there is thought. Just as we send a message to contract the muscles, so also can we send a message to relax the muscles. But as we have no control over such ‘involuntary’ organs as the heart, lungs, liver, brain etc., we cannot directly send the thoughts for relaxation to these organs. Yet they too need rest.

Here yogis use the subconscious mind, which controls all the autonomic functions of the involuntary organs. During this process of relaxation, the conscious mind sends a message to a particular organ, such as the heart or liver. This message is received by the subconscious mind and the order is immediately carried out. This relaxation technique is known as autosuggestion. Using this technique one can relax all the involuntary organs in the body. We start from the toes up to the eyes and ears, instructing each part of the body to in turn. Then messages are sent to the kidneys, liver etc. to relax, ending in the brain and the mind.

Mental Relaxation

The constant tension put on the mind owing to unnecessary worries and anxieties takes away more energy than physical tension. During mental tension breathe slowly and rhythmically for a few minutes focussing on each inhalation and exhalation. Slowly the mind will calm down.

Spiritual Relaxation

We cannot completely remove all tension and worry unless we reach a state of spiritual relaxation. However we try to relax the mind. As long as we identify with the body and mind there will be worries, sorrows, anxieties, fear and anger. Yogis know that unless we can withdraw from identification with the body and senses and separate ourselves from ego-consciousness, we will not be able to relax totally. From the state of mental relaxation the yogi draws the mind within and identifies with the all-pervading, all-powerful, all-peaceful Self, or pure consciousness, the source of power, knowledge, peace and strength.

We have fallen prey to the negative emotions of the mind through identification with body and mind and the only way to free ourselves from their clutches is by asserting our real nature that is ‘I am Pure Consciousness or Self.’ Identification with the Self completes the process of relaxation.

Yoga & Meditation for Boosting Immunity

Daily practise of Yoga & meditation for few minutes is widely recognised as one of the best immunity boosting techniques world over. This is like health insurance. Anyone who does yoga or meditation or both daily for some time keeps all kinds of infections at bay by increasing his or her immunity to great extent. Our breathing patterns, because of the poor lifestyle that many of us lead nowadays, have become more or less impaired. Many diseases, both serious and less so, can be traced to poor breathing habits. Shallow breathing, which is how most of us breathe, results in only a small percentage of the millions of air sacs which make up the lungs being used to absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide and other waste products. This leads to an imperfect and superficial ventilation of the lungs, with depleted air remaining in the lungs hour after hour and even day after day. Even with thirty breaths a minute, the greater part of the lungs remains unused; there is too much movement and too little real breathing. Such a state of affairs needs correction. Basic of yoga & Meditation should be known to one who wants to begin for which we have given few links for further guidance.

Spiritual Angle

Spiritually speaking love for earthly life is the main cause of all fears. Clinging to life and body. Attachment to objects causes fear. Attachment to name and fame causes fear. Attachment to money and woman causes fear. Any attachment is the womb of terrible fear. One who possesses, fears. He does not fear who has renounced everything, who perceives the Divine Soul in one and all.

One is afraid, because he love certain things. Love is the cause of fear. We do not wish to part with certain things. And when anything obstructs our acquiring those objects of love and desire, we are annoyed, we are afraid of that, and we lose the mental balance. Equanimity of Mind is advisable in such situation.

Experts recommend for a deep introspect within oneself from different angle. Find out the root of the trouble. If one is not able to do this, getting a help of a psychotherapist is highly recommend.

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY- Meditation Basics

Much has been said and written about meditation, yet it takes years to properly understand its nature. It cannot be taught, just as sleep cannot be taught. One may have a king-sized posture-pedic mattress, an air-conditioned room, and the absence of all disturbances, but sleep may not come.  Sleep itself is not in anyone’s hands. One falls into it. In the same way, meditation comes by itself. To still the mind and enter into the silence requires daily practice. Yet there are certain steps that can be taken to establish a foundation and ensure success. Before beginning, have a proper environment and attitude. Your place of meditation, schedule, physical health and mental state should reflect a readiness to turn inward. Many difficult obstacles are removed by creating a setting which is conducive to meditation.

GUIDE TO MEDITATION

The following are practical points regarding the basic techniques and stages of meditation. They are primarily intended for the beginner, although even the most experienced meditator will find a review of them useful.

Regularity

Regularity of time, place and practice are the most important elements of the practice to consider. Regularity conditions the mind to slow down its activities with a minimum of delay. It is difficult to focus the mind, which wants to jump about as soon as you sit for concentration. Just as a conditioned reflex is a response to established external stimuli, so the mind will settle down more quickly when time and place are established.

Timing – Dawn & Dusk Suitable

The most effective times are dawn and dusk when the atmosphere is charged with special spiritual force. The preferred time is known as brahmamuhurta in Sanskritthe hours between four and six a.m. In these quiet hours after sleep, the mind is clear and unruffled by activities of the day. Refreshed and free of worldly concerns, it can be moulded more easily; concentration will come without effort. If it is not feasible to sit for meditation at this time, choose an hour when you are not involved with daily activities and the mind is apt to be calm. Regularity is the most important consideration.

Place of Meditation

Try to have a separate room for meditation. If this is impossible, screen off a portion of a room; do not allow others to enter it. The area should be used only for meditation and should be kept free from other vibrations and associations. Incense should be burned morning and evening. The focal point of the room should be a picture or image of the chosen deity or inspirational figure, with the meditation mat placed before it. As meditation is repeated, the powerful vibrations set up will be lodged in the room. In six months peace and purity of the atmosphere will be felt; it will have a magnetic aura. In times of stress you can sit in the room, do repetition of mantra for half an hour, and experience comfort and relief.

Direction

When sitting, face north or east in order to take advantage of favourable magnetic vibrations. Sit in a comfortable steady posture with spine and neck held erect but not tense. This helps to steady the mind and encourages concentration. The psychic current must be able to travel unimpeded from the base of spine to the top of the head. It is not necessary to place the legs in padmasana, the classic lotus posture. Any comfortable cross-legged posture provides a firm base for the body. It makes a triangular path for the flow of energy, which must be contained rather than dispersed in all directions. Metabolism, brain waves and breathing will slow down as concentration deepens.

Regulate Breathing

Consciously regulate the breath. Begin with five minutes of deep abdominal breathing. Inhale for three seconds and exhale for three seconds. Then slow the breath to an imperceptible rate.Keep the breathing rhythmic. Regulation of the breath also regulates the flow of prana, the vital energy. Allow the mind to wander at first. It will jump around, but will eventually become concentrated along with the concentration of prana.

Occupy your Mind

Do not force the mind to be still. This will set into motion additional brain waves, hindering meditation. If the mind persists in wandering, simply disassociate from it, and watch it, objectively, as though you were watching a movie. It will gradually slow down. Select a focal point on which the mind may rest. For those who are predominantly intellectual, the object of focus should be visualised in the space between the eyebrows. For those who are more devotional, it should be visualised in the heart plexus in the middle of the chest. Never change this focal point.

Object of Meditation

Focus on a neutral or uplifting object or symbol, holding the image at the place of concentration. If using a mantra, repeat it mentally, and coordinate the repetition with the breathing. If you do not have a personal mantra, OM may be used. Although mental repetition is stronger, the mantra may be repeated aloud if one becomes drowsy. Never change the mantra.Repetition will lead to pure thought, in which sound vibration merges with thought vibration, and there is no awareness of meaning. Vocal repetition progresses through mental repetition to telepathic language, and from there to pure thought. This is a subtle state of transcendental bliss with duality, where there remains awareness of subject and object.

Be Blank before Meditation

Before beginning, command the mind to be quiet for a specific length of time. Forget the past, present and future. With practice, duality disappears and samadhi, the superconscious state, is reached. Do not become impatient, as this takes a long time. In samadhi one rests in a state of bliss in which the knower, knowledge and known become One. This is the superconscious state reached by mystics of all faiths and persuasions. Begin the practice of meditation with twenty minute periods and increase to one hour.

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY – The Science of Yogic Breathing

Today, being 21st June, is an International Yoga Day. To mark this occasion of International Yoga Day, it is most pertinent to bring forward few techniques that was followed by the Yogis of yore to our Readers. Let us therefore dwell into the science of Yogic Breathing as it use to be traditionally. In fact, the practice of pranayama involves both the extension and suspension of breath. It is a regulation of the breathing process. Breathing is a semi-voluntary function: it continues automatically, but it also can be regulated consciously or unconsciously. How we breathe is influenced by our habits, thoughts and emotions, as well as by the heavenly bodies and influences our physical health as well as our mind.

Poor Lifestyle leads to wrong Breathing Problem

Breath Determines Lifespan

According to yoga our lifespan is measured by the amount of breaths we take. We are born with a certain amount of breaths, whether they are full and deep or short and rapid, one or thirty in a minute. In essence, time itself is measured by the breath. Short, shallow breathing means a shorter life, whilst by lengthening each respiration the duration of our life is automatically extended.

Another aspect of breathing in yoga concerns our subtle or astral body which is made up of vital energy or prana and the channels through which the prana flows, known as nadis. There are many thousands of these channels in the astral body, but the three main ones, which regulate all others, are the concern of one who practices controlled breathing. The even, regular and balanced flow of breath is mirrored in the astral body by the even, regular and balanced flow of prana through two of these nadis, known as ida and pingala—referred in esoteric language as the Moon and the Sun respectively—which are stimulated through the breath of the nostrils. This balance makes the difference between sickness and health. Ida and pingala are stimulated by the breath through the nostrils and as such are under our direct control. Shallow, short breathing means that the pranic currents flow in a sporadic, convulsive  manner and do not pass through the whole length of the ida and pingala nadis as they should. Also, the heart depends upon the mechanism of breathing for its regulation. A considerable amount of energy is wasted in poor breathing patterns leading to a more or less depleted condition.

Yogic Breathing

Yogic breathing is essentially slow, deep and rhythmic, instead of the more irregular and incomplete breathing that is common to most of us: One, two, or four respirations in a minute, instead of many, each using the full extension of the lungs, allowing the prana to pass fully through the two nadis—the Sun through the right nostril and the Moon through the left—reaching the root chakra, known as the muladhara.

Steps to Regulate breath process

  • Initially the breathing consists of a slow inhalation followed immediately, or almost immediately, by exhalation. The two parts of the breathing process are equal in length here.
  • After some practice the exhalation is extended so it is double the length of the inhalation.
  • In due time after further practice, a retention (kumbhaka) between the two can be introduced.  The breathing is then made up of three parts, inhalation, exhalation and retention. At this stage the retention is added at the end of inhalation before the exhalation. The three parts may be equal, for example the count of eight for each—inhalation, retention and exhalation, 8-8-8.  Or exhalation can be double the inhalation, retention twice the exhalation and four times the inhalation: inhalation 8, retention 32, exhalation 16.
  • Eventually, as the practice progresses a fourth phase, a pause between exhalation and inhalation is added. Four-part breathing may begin with equal inhalation/exhalation, and between them a pause and a retention, each half time. For instance, counting eight for both inhalation and exhalation, and four for both pause and retention. Thus—pause 4, inhalation 8, retention 4, exhalation 8.  Eventually exhalation may be doubled, keeping the breath extended up to the double of it, which is approximately one minute for each respiration. Thus—pause 32, inhalation 8, retention 4, exhalation 16.

Times should be counted on the pulse. Or it may help also to repeat on the rhythm of OM-TAT-SAT-OM so each repetition becomes naturally a multiple and potency of two.

Eventually with protracted and persistent practice the breath is regulated through alternate nostrils in such way that one will breathe in from the same nostril of the preceding exhalation, and change the nostril after the retention; always the same nostril after the pause after the exhalation and a different one after the retention after the inhalation.

Of course, breathing should always be through the nostrils. From the esoteric viewpoint breathing through the mouth produces a confusion in the pranic currents of the astral body which can lead to some disturbance.

By keeping a daily routine, with a fixed time devoted to slow and deep breathing, the subconscious mind will take up automatically the pattern and respiration will become gradually extended and slowed down little by little. Eventually one will come to breathe naturally no more than four times a minute, thus gaining health and endurance. The ideal should be either one vighati, (24 seconds) or even up to one minute for each breath.

Whenever making a resolution, either mental or physical, this will be done more efficiently and surely by retaining the breath as the resolution is made. Those who are used to the practice of affirmations should repeat them preferably during the retention, or repeat them in time with the three or four phases of each breath, using them to keep the tempo or rhythm.  It is also good to keep in mind that breathing with the left nostril favours mental activity and quiet work. As well, it cools and refreshes  the body. On the other hand, breathing with the right nostril favours physical exertion and hard work and has a warming effect.  Also, during sleep and when taking food it is better to breathe in the Sun (right nostril). During daytime and when doing light work in the Moon (left nostril) is best.

Thought Power & Its Significance

A lot many authors across the globe have already written a lot about a very fascinating topic : Mind, Its Concepts & Functioning, How to Control Mind, How Mind Works, What are Thoughts, Where do Thoughts come from and so on so forth. In fact, being an intriguing domain with far reaching inclination among avid readers and curious people many of such books have gone on to become the Best Sellers. Having glanced couple of such books on this fascinating topic by some of the well known authorities, I am happy to share some of the Thoughts presented by these authority for the benefit of my readers.

Who travels faster? A Thought or a Light

In fact, light travels at the rate of 1,86,000 miles per second. But Thoughts virtually travel in no time. Thought is finer than ether, the medium of electricity. Thoughts of peace and harmony send by one produces similar thoughts of harmony and peace in other like minded people. While thoughts full of jealousy, revenge and hatred stir similar thoughts of hatred and discord in like minded people.

How Thoughts Travel in Space?

A stone thrown in a pool of water produce a succession of concentric waves. Also a light of a candle similarly give rise to waves of ethereal vibrations travelling in all directions from the candle. Similarly, a thought, whether good or evil, crosses the mind of a person, it gives rise to vibrations in the Manas or mental atmosphere, which travel far and wide in all directions.

How to accomplish through Thoughts?

The stronger the thoughts, the earlier the fructification. Thought is focussed and given a particular direction and, in the degree that thought is thus focussed and given direction, it is effective in the work it is sent out to accomplish.

Is Thought Culture a Science?

Thought is a finer force. This is supplied to us by food. If the food is pure, thought also becomes pure. He who has pure thoughts speaks very powerfully and produces deep impression on the minds of the hearers by his speech. He influences thousands of persons through his pure thoughts. Entertain always pure, sublime thoughts. Thought-culture is an exact science.

Do Thoughts work as Wireless Messages?

Yes, it does. Those who harbour thoughts of hatred, jealousy, revenge and malice will cause unrest and ill-will amongst men whose minds respond to such vibrations.Thought moves with tremendous velocity. Those who entertain sublime and pious thoughts help others, who are in their vicinity and at a distance also.

Conservation of Thought-energy

In physics you have the term ‘power of orientation’. Though the mass of energy is there, it must be connected to magnet for the current to flow through the power of orientation. Even so, the mental energy which is dissipated and misdirected in various worthless worldly thoughts should be well directed in proper spiritual channels. Hence do not store in your brain useless information. Learn to unmind the mind. Unlearn whatever has been of no use to you. Then only can you fill your mind with divine thoughts.

Weight, Size and Shape of Thoughts

Every thought has got weight, shape, size, form, colour, quality and power. A Yogi can see all these thoughts directly with his inner Yogic eye. Thoughts are like things, so also you can give a useful, powerful thought to anyone and also take it back. It’s a rare Yogic science known only to few in this world. You must know the right technique of handling and manipulating a thought.

Thought—Its Form, Its Name and Colour

Suppose your mind is rendered perfectly calm, entirely without thoughts. Nevertheless, as soon as thought begins to rise, it will immediately take name and form. Every thought has a certain name and a certain form. Form is the grosser and name the finer state of a single manifesting power called thought. But these three are one; wherever there is one, the other two also are there. Wherever name is, there are form and thought. A spiritual thought has yellow colour. A thought charged with anger and hatred is of a dark red colour; a selfish thought has a brown colour and so on.

Thought—Its Power, Workings and Uses

Thought is a vital, living dynamic power—the most vital, subtle and irresistible force existing in the universe. Through the instrumentality of thought you acquire creative power. Thought passes from one man to another. It influences people; a man of powerful thought can influence readily people of weak thoughts.

We Live in a Boundless World of Thoughts

Thought alone is the whole world. Thought binds a man. You live in a world of thoughts. First is thought. Then there is the expression of that thought through the organ of speech. Thought and language are intimately connected. Thoughts of anger, bitterness and malice injure others. If the mind which is the cause of all thoughts vanishes, the external objects will disappear.

The thoughts that we perceive all round us are only the mind in form or substance. Thought creates, thought destroys. Bitterness and sweetness do not lie in the objects, but they are in the mind, in the subject, in thinking. They are created by thought.Friend and enemy, virtue and vice are in mind only. Good and evil, pleasure and pain do not proceed from objects but belong to attitude of your mind. There is nothing good nor pleasant in this world. Your imagination makes it so.

Thoughts, Electricity and Philosophy

Thoughts are giant-powers. They are more powerful than electricity. They control your life, mould your character, and shape your destiny. Mark how one thought expands into many thoughts, within a short time. The expansion of thoughts of the mind towards the objects is bondage; and, the renunciation of thoughts is liberation. You must be very watchful in nipping the thoughts in the bud. Only then will you be really happy. Mind tricks and plays. You must understand its nature, ways and habits. Then only can you control it very easily.

Outer World Pre-exists in the Thoughts

Every thought has an image. A table is a mental image plus some external thing. Whatever you see outside has its counterpart in the mind. The pupil is a small round thing in the eye. Retina is a small structure. How is it that the image of a big mountain seen through a small aperture or structure cast on the mind? This is a marvel of marvels. The image of a mountain already exists in the mind. The mind is like a vast sheet of canvas that contains all the pictures of the objects seen outside.

World – A Projection of Thought

Careful reflection will show that the entire universe is in reality the projection of the human mind also known as ManomatramJagat in Hindi. Purification and control of the mind is the central aim of all Yogas. Mind in itself is but a record of impressions that keep expressing ceaselessly as impulses and thoughts. The mind is what it does. Thought impels you to action; activity creates fresh impressions in the mind-stuff.Yoga strikes at the very root of this vicious circle by a method of effectively inhibiting the functions of the mind. Yoga checks, controls and stops the root function of the mind, i.e., thought. When thought is transcended, intuition functions and Self-knowledge supervenes.Thought has the potency of creating or undoing the world in the twinkling of an eye. Mind creates the world according to its own thought. It is the mind that creates this universe.
